Manchester United Backed to Revive Interest in Emiliano Martinez Ahead of 2026

Manchester United could reignite their pursuit of Argentina and Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, with renewed talks possible as early as the January transfer window.

Former United chief scout Mick Brown, who worked at Old Trafford during the club’s most successful era, believes Martinez remains firmly on the club’s radar despite United strengthening their goalkeeping ranks in the summer.

The Red Devils came close to signing the 33-year-old World Cup winner earlier this year before negotiations with Aston Villa collapsed. While Martinez was open to the move, both clubs failed to reach an agreement, forcing United to sign Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens instead.

Currently, Altay Bayindir is United’s first-choice in the Premier League, while Andre Onana has been sent out on loan. Manager Ruben Amorim has nevertheless continued to press for another experienced option between the posts, adding to speculation of a renewed approach for Martinez.

“I’m still surprised they didn’t get Martinez,” Brown said. “He wanted the move, they wanted him, but they couldn’t agree with Villa. Amorim is still asking for a goalkeeper, so I have no doubt Martinez is one of the names on their shortlist. He’s strong, imposing, and a leader in the dressing room — exactly what Manchester United need right now.”

Martinez, who left Arsenal for Aston Villa in 2020, has since established himself as one of the Premier League’s standout goalkeepers. His heroics for Argentina, including crucial penalty saves during their 2022 FIFA World Cup triumph, cemented his reputation as a reliable and commanding presence.

While questions remain over his age and valuation, Martinez’s pedigree and leadership could provide United with the stability and authority they lack. His potential arrival would also offer depth and competition alongside Lammens as the club continues its rebuilding process under Amorim.

With veteran midfielder Casemiro expected to depart in 2026 and rivals such as Liverpool actively strengthening their squads, United face mounting pressure to secure proven leaders. A move for Martinez — whether in January or next summer — could prove decisive in restoring balance to their squad.
