Wike Rules Out Recommending Commissioners to Fubara

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said he has no intention of nominating commissioners for Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, following the lifting of the emergency rule in the state.

President Bola Tinubu had imposed a six-month emergency rule in Rivers State in March 2025 after heightened political tensions between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Wike. The crisis, which stalled governance in the oil-rich South-South state, was widely attributed to disputes over political control and appointments.

In an interview on Politics Today aired by Channels Television on Thursday, Wike dismissed speculation that he intended to influence the composition of Fubara’s new cabinet. He stated that the governor would have full autonomy in selecting his commissioners and running state affairs.

“I cannot impose anything on the governor,” Wike said, stressing that he neither has candidates to recommend nor any plans to interfere with appointments in Rivers State.

The development comes as Governor Fubara resumes full executive functions after months of federal intervention. Analysts note that the governor’s next steps, particularly the selection of commissioners and other key officials, will be critical to stabilising the state’s political environment and rebuilding trust in governance.

Observers also point out that Wike’s public assurance could help ease tensions, given that his alleged imposition of political loyalists had been cited as a major trigger for the earlier crisis.

With governance resuming under Fubara’s control, attention will be focused on how the administration balances political reconciliation with effective delivery of public services in one of Nigeria’s most strategic oil-producing states.
