The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), identified as Shamsideen Adio, for allegedly assaulting a dispatch rider to death on Lagos Island.
The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday, September 17, along Tapa Street, following a heated altercation. Witnesses said the dispute began after the rider was accused of scratching Adio’s vehicle, an argument that quickly escalated into violence.
Eyewitness accounts and a video shared on social media by journalist Chris Nwandu alleged that Adio, aided by colleagues, repeatedly attacked the rider until he collapsed. Nwandu further claimed that Adio is known in the area for violent confrontations and had previously assaulted commercial tricycle operators, one of whom was recently hospitalized.
Police sources confirmed that the victim succumbed to injuries sustained during the attack. A senior officer, who spoke under anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the press, said the suspect has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further interrogation.
“The victim died as a result of the injuries. The suspect is in custody, and investigations are ongoing,” the officer said.
As of press time, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Abimbola Adebisi, had not issued an official statement.
The incident has renewed public concern about violent conduct linked to members of the NURTW in Lagos, where frequent clashes and reports of brutality involving union members have raised questions about accountability and law enforcement.
Authorities are expected to brief the public once investigations progress, while calls for justice continue to mount from residents and civil society groups.
