Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday night, Tambuwal said Tinubu no longer embodies the democratic ideals they once shared during Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggles.
“If Atiku is running and Bola Tinubu is, I will not support Tinubu,” Tambuwal stated. “On Obi, if that situation presents itself, I will decide.”
The lawmaker emphasized that his decision to shun the APC was rooted in principle rather than convenience.
“I will not join APC. It’s a personal decision, and I do not believe in the way the country is being run currently,” he said.
Tambuwal, who served as Director-General of Atiku’s presidential campaign in 2023, recalled warning Nigerians about looming hardship if Tinubu were elected.
“I can’t say that I’m disappointed because it’s clear. He is appearing to be different from what I knew of him in the past when we collaborated,” Tambuwal noted.
The senator also traced his political realignment back to 2018, when he left the APC over concerns about governance direction.
“I saw the way APC was driving Nigeria to where it is today as far back in 2018, and I left in August that year,” he explained.
Tambuwal’s remarks come amid growing opposition maneuvering ahead of the 2027 elections, with several figures calling for a united front to challenge Tinubu and the APC.
