Gunmen Overrun Military Barracks in Borno’s Banki Town, Seize Weapons

Suspected insurgents have launched a deadly overnight attack on Banki, a border town in Borno State, overrunning a military barracks and carting away weapons after soldiers reportedly abandoned their posts.

The assault, which began around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday and stretched into the early hours of Friday, left several people dead and forced troops to retreat into neighboring Cameroon, residents and security sources confirmed.

According to an internal memo from the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), the attackers invaded Banki in large numbers, engaged in heavy gunfire, and eventually breached the military base.

A soldier from the 152 Battalion, stationed in Banki, also confirmed that the onslaught overwhelmed security personnel, forcing a tactical retreat.

Residents reported seeing at least seven bodies, including three soldiers, after the raid. Reuters, however, noted it could not independently verify the casualty figures.

“Both military and paramilitary personnel fled to Cameroon, and it was only this morning that they returned,” said Aliyu Haruna, a resident who spoke to reporters.
