Busy Apapa–Oshodi Expressway was thrown into chaos on Sunday after a fuel-laden tanker overturned and burst into flames at the Iyana-Isolo bus stop in Lagos, leaving two people injured and destroying vehicles.
Eyewitnesses said the tanker, which reportedly lost its brakes, rammed into a commercial bus before toppling into a roadside gutter and exploding. The inferno consumed the tanker, a container-laden trailer, and parts of the expressway, forcing commuters to flee for safety.
“This morning, the tanker developed a fault. On its way, it lost its brakes, and in an attempt to stop, it rammed into a commercial bus that had stopped to drop off passengers. The driver of the bus was rushed to the hospital,” one witness told reporters.
Another eyewitness, truck driver Oladiran Olanrewaju, added: “The tanker was fully loaded, and in trying to avoid killing many people, the driver lost control, and the vehicle eventually fell over. It took about 45 minutes before the fire service arrived.”
Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Fire Service, LASEMA, police, and officials of Ikeja Electric, were deployed to contain the blaze and restore order. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that a flatbed trailer, a container-laden truck, and a commercial bus were all involved in the crash.
While two persons — the tanker driver and a co-passenger — sustained injuries, authorities confirmed there were no fatalities.
Vice Chairman of Mushin Local Government, Tunbosun Haruna, who visited the scene, praised the coordinated response. Authorities have since cordoned off the affected section of the expressway and diverted traffic to alternative route.
