Another vigilante operative and four residents were killed late Friday night when gunmen attacked Ajanaumuna village in Ezinachi Community, Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State, South-east Nigeria.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Henry Okoye, disclosed the incident in a statement on Monday. According to him, the assailants, suspected to be members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its militant wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), carried out the assault at about 10:30 p.m.
Mr Okoye said the victims included a member of the local youth vigilante team, Emeka Ezeagwula, alongside four other residents identified as Emeka Ezeagwula, Chidi Chileke, Ejike Nwankwo, and Chikodi Ezeagwula, the only female among the dead.
“The assailants further set ablaze the residence of the youth security leader and destroyed five motorcycles,” Mr Okoye stated.
Police operatives deployed to the scene evacuated the victims to Okigwe General Hospital. Their remains have since been deposited in the hospital mortuary, while one survivor is currently receiving treatment.
The Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Aboki Danjuma, condemned the attack and vowed that those responsible would be apprehended and prosecuted. He expressed condolences to the bereaved families, prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased, and wished the injured survivor a speedy recovery.
Mr Danjuma urged residents to remain calm, assuring that security has been reinforced in Okigwe and surrounding communities. He further appealed to citizens to assist police operatives with credible and timely information that could aid ongoing investigations.
