A wave of potential defections is stirring tension within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as prominent figures including Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, and members of the party's Board of Trustees (BoT) are reportedly considering a move to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Former Senator Effiong Bob, who represented Akwa Ibom North Central between 2007 and 2011 and chaired the Senate Committee on Finance, is reportedly finalising plans to exit the PDP after nearly three decades with the party. Sources indicate his decision is driven by frustration over unresolved internal crises, particularly disputes surrounding the National Secretary position.
A close associate of the senator cited concerns over the PDP’s preparedness for the 2027 general elections, referencing the 2019 APC loss in Zamfara State due to flawed primaries
Governor Umo Eno is also rumoured to be re-evaluating his political future, with sources suggesting he may soon align with the APC, pending a final decision from his predecessor, former Governor Udom Emmanuel.
Governor Eno has recently expressed support for President Bola Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, further fueling speculation about a possible switch.
In response to the developments, PDP Deputy National Youth Leader, Comrade Timothy Osadolor, downplayed the impact of the defections, urging those intending to leave to do so without delay.
He emphasized the party’s focus on rebuilding with committed members rather than retaining individuals who may no longer be loyal. “These are people who have benefitted from the PDP but are now undermining it from within.”
Osadolor also argued that political success is built on grassroots support, not just prominent figures, noting that despite APC controlling 25 states ahead of the 2023 elections, it only secured victory in 12.
