Poultry Farmers Decry Low Egg Consumption, Blame Retailers and Economic Hardship

The Lagos State chapter of the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) has raised concerns over declining egg consumption, attributing the trend to low purchasing power, economic hardship, and profiteering by retailers.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, PAN Lagos Chairman, Mojeed Iyiola, stated that despite being the most affordable source of protein in the country, eggs are experiencing reduced patronage. He noted that a crate of eggs sells for less than ₦5,500 at the farm gate, yet retailers inflate prices excessively, often selling for as much as ₦6,500.

“Retailers are making more profit than the farmers, who do all the work,” Iyiola said. “A profit margin of ₦1,000 per crate is excessive and discourages consumers.”

He added that while the cost of production remains relatively stable, the perception of high egg prices persists due to retailer markups and weakened consumer purchasing power.

Iyiola also highlighted that temporary subventions from the Lagos State Government had helped mitigate costs, but support has since been suspended. He called for renewed government intervention to support the sector.

Echoing his concerns, poultry processor Joel Oduware pointed to the broader economic downturn and low disposable income as major factors affecting egg consumption nationwide.

“Even with schools in session, we haven’t seen the expected rise in demand. Many Nigerians are struggling to meet basic nutritional needs,” Oduware said.

He suggested a controlled reduction in egg prices to address market surplus, provided it does not undermine production costs.
