Minimum Wage: Katsina NLC Poised for Strike Action Over Delayed Implementation

The Katsina State chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a warning, signalling its readiness to align with the national NLC's directive for a nationwide strike if the state government fails to address outstanding issues related to the new minimum wage.

NLC Chairman for Katsina State, Comrade Hussain Hamisu, expressed dissatisfaction over delays in negotiations regarding arrears for the newly approved minimum wage and the inclusion of retirees in the payment scheme. Speaking to The Nation, he stated that the state government’s implementation committee had concluded its work, yet critical concerns remain unresolved.

Hamisu emphasized that retirees’ entitlements, outlined in official circulars at the time of their retirement, should be prioritized in the ongoing discussions. He warned that an indefinite strike could be declared by Tuesday if no progress is made.

Meanwhile, the Katsina State Government recently inaugurated a 15-member committee, chaired by Secretary to the State Government Barrister Abdullahi Garba Faskari, to develop a roadmap for implementing the ₦70,000 national minimum wage, including consequential adjustments for workers at state and local government levels. The committee has been given 21 days to complete its task and submit recommendations.

This looming strike adds to the broader tension nationwide, as labor unions intensify pressure on governments to fulfill wage obligations promptly.
