Amidst the nationwide protests against poor governance and economic hardship, known as the “#10daysofrage” demonstration, the Nigeria police have arrested 50 individuals in Nasarawa State. The protests, which began peacefully, have escalated in various regions, leading to clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement agencies.
According to DSP Ramhan Nansel, the Nasarawa State Police Public Relations Officer, the arrests were made in response to the protesters attacking police personnel and causing a breakdown of law and order in the state. The arrests were distributed across several areas: 25 individuals were apprehended in Lafia, 16 in Karu, six in Keffi, and three in Mararaba-Udege of Nasarawa Local Government Areas.
Those detained are currently in police custody and are undergoing interrogation and further investigation to ascertain the extent of their involvement in the unrest.
DSP Nansel assured that the police and other security agencies would continue to handle the protests professionally. He emphasized the commitment of the police to maintaining order and protecting lives and properties during these demonstrations. Furthermore, he issued a stern warning to any individuals or groups intent on causing chaos under the guise of protesting, stating that they would face the full wrath of the law.
The #EndBadGovernance protests have seen varying degrees of intensity across the country. While some states have witnessed peaceful demonstrations, others have experienced significant violence and destruction. In states like Kano and Gombe, protests turned violent with reports of looting and vandalism. Abuja saw clashes when police fired tear gas to prevent protesters from accessing critical areas like Eagle Square.
Journalists covering the protests have also been targeted. In Abuja, several journalists were injured, and at least two were arrested, including a PREMIUM TIMES journalist. Despite identifying themselves as members of the press, they faced physical assault and had their equipment confiscated by the police.
Today, as the #10daysofrage protests continue, heavy police presence is noted in key locations. In Lagos, police have urged protesters gathered at Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park to remain calm and avoid obstructing roads. In Port Harcourt, demonstrators have convened at Pleasure Park to continue their protests.
The ongoing demonstrations highlight the widespread dissatisfaction among Nigerians with the current state of governance and economic conditions. The protesters’ determination underscores the urgent need for reforms and effective responses from the government.
In these turbulent times, the role of credible journalism is paramount. News outlets like PREMIUM TIMES have called for public support to continue delivering fact-based, reliable news. They emphasize the importance of accessible journalism in ensuring that the voices of the protesters and the realities on the ground are accurately reported.
As the #EndBadGovernance protests unfold, the government's response and the actions of security forces will be crucial in determining the trajectory of these demonstrations. Addressing the root causes of the protests, ensuring accountability, and fostering dialogue are essential steps towards achieving stability and addressing the grievances of the Nigerian populace.
The arrest of 50 protesters in Nasarawa State is a significant development in the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests. As tensions remain high, the focus will be on how the government and security agencies handle the situation moving forward. The commitment to professional conduct by the police and the calls for peaceful demonstrations highlight the complex dynamics at play in Nigeria’s current socio-political landscape.
