President Tinubu's Commitment to Nigerian Workers

President Bola Tinubu has expressed his concern for the welfare of Nigerian workers and his commitment to a fair and realistic minimum wage. In a meeting with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), President Tinubu stated that Nigerian workers, as the driving force of the nation, deserve improved welfare, better wages, and safe and enhanced working conditions.

While acknowledging the need for better wages, President Tinubu called for realistic expectations regarding the minimum wage. He questioned the current practice of adjusting wages every five years, suggesting that adjustments could be made more frequently, such as every two or three years. He emphasized the need for a pragmatic approach based on a deep understanding of all factors.

The NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, emphasized the need for an upward adjustment to the minimum wage, noting the difficulties faced by Nigerian workers. He also congratulated the President on the Supreme Court judgement affirming the constitutional rights of local governments regarding financial autonomy. The TUC President, Comrade Festus Osifo, highlighted the impact of inflation on the value of the naira and the need for government measures to address the rising cost of food and transportation.

Further talks between President Tinubu and the labour leaders were adjourned until the following week to allow for wider consultation with all stakeholders.
