Nigeria has experienced another nationwide blackout as the national grid system collapsed, leaving millions of homes and businesses without power. This is the second time in three months that the country has faced such a widespread power outage.
The blackout occurred on Thursday, July 6, 2024, at around 4:30 pm. Various distribution companies (DisCos) reported that their feeders became inactive, resulting in the widespread blackouts across the country. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) recorded a drop in power generation from 2,984 megawatts (MW) to zero within an hour, with all 21 plants connected to the grid ceasing operations.
The cause of the grid collapse is still under investigation, but it has been attributed to a sudden load drop in one of the generators in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The TCN has commenced grid recovery efforts, and power supply has been gradually restored in some areas.
This recent blackout highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Nigeria's power sector and the need for robust infrastructure and maintenance to ensure a stable and reliable electricity supply. The frequent grid collapses have significant implications for businesses, households, and the overall economy.
