43rd Olubadan of Ibadan: Oba Owolabi Olakulehin Receives staff of office

Today marks a historic occasion in Ibadan as Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State is set to bestow the staff of office upon the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, at a grand coronation ceremony held at the illustrious Mapo Hall, Ibadan.

The event is anticipated to draw eminent traditional rulers, prominent public figures, distinguished members of society, and personalities from diverse backgrounds.

The coronation follows Governor Makinde's endorsement of Olakulehin's nomination by the Olubadan-in-council, in accordance with the powers vested in him by section 19 (Cap 28) Law of Oyo State 2000 (as amended).

The Olubadan stool had remained vacant since the passing of the 42nd Olubadan, Oba Lekan Balogun, on March 14, 2024. Today's coronation marks the culmination of a 41-year journey for the Olakulehin family of Ita Baale Olugbode, ending their patient wait for one of their own to ascend to the pinnacle of the Olubadan chieftaincy.

Oba Olakulehin's path to the throne began in 1983 when he assumed the role of Mogaji (family head), marking the initial step toward becoming Olubadan.

In the Olubadan lineage, there are two principal ruling lines: Egbe Agba (civil) and Balogun (military), with Olakulehin hailing from the esteemed Balogun line. Each prospective Olubadan ascends a ladder of either 22 or 23 rungs, depending on their line of ascent.

Reflecting on his journey to the throne, Oba Olakulehin expressed profound gratitude: "When we started the ladder (Mogaji), I asked, 'Do we get to the climax?' And they said, yes. So, I knew that I would become Olubadan of Ibadanland. Now that we are there, we still need to pray to God because he has done good things for us in Ibadan. So, we must continue to praise him."

Today's coronation not only honors the rich cultural heritage of Ibadan but also signifies a new era of leadership under Oba Olakulehin's stewardship. It symbolizes continuity, community strength, and the preservation of Ibadan's unique traditions amidst modern challenges.

As Oyo State and the entire Ibadan community gather to witness this momentous event, the spirit of unity and celebration resonates, promising a future guided by the wisdom and leadership of the 43rd Olubadan.
