In a recent speech at his 64th Birthday and 5th Year Thanksgiving Service, Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State in Nigeria reflected on the challenges he faced in his journey to becoming governor. He stated that his predecessor, whom he did not name, actively campaigned against his emergence as governor and supported a candidate from another party. Despite the obstacles, Abiodun expressed his gratitude to God for the victory he achieved.
In his own words, Abiodun said, "The process through which I emerged as Governor was a very unusual one; one in which my predecessor who was in the same party with me was fighting me and campaigning for another person in another party, and I will sit down and ask myself, ‘Baba God, this is very unusual, why do I have to go through so much to assume this office?’ And then I will answer myself that it is because God wants to take that glory."
Governor Abiodun further described his five years in office as governor as a challenging yet beautiful experience.
He acknowledged that his administration faced turbulence and rancor, but emphasized that God had given them victory throughout it all. Abiodun expressed his commitment to reshaping the economy of Ogun State and highlighted the progress being made, such as the plan to make the state an oil-producing one through oil exploration by the Ministry of Petroleum Resources.
Abiodun also responded to criticism from the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last general election, Ladi Adebutu. Adebutu had criticized the 8-kilometer Sagamu-Iperu road project of the state government. In his response, Abiodun stated that his focus was on the positive trajectory of the Gateway State, rather than dwelling on comments from someone who failed to acknowledge the extensive road infrastructure developed by his administration.
Governor Abiodun reiterated his commitment to making life more comfortable for the people of Ogun State through the provision of infrastructure. He promised to continue improving the well-being of the people by embarking on more infrastructure projects.
Abiodun also questioned the actions of the Adebutu family, who he mentioned as having significant wealth but failed to repair the road that runs through their house. He expressed surprise that despite their wealth, they did not utilize a fraction of it to address the road's deplorable state.
Overall, Governor Abiodun expressed gratitude for the experiences and victories of his administration, highlighting his dedication to the progress and development of Ogun State.
