The mediation talks between the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) over a new minimum wage are currently underway in Abuja. The meeting is being held at the Senate wing of the National Assembly Complex and is facilitated by the National Assembly. The meeting is attended by several key figures, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Abbas Tajudeen, and representatives from the Federal Government such as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume and the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Wale Edun.
Representing the organized labor are the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, and the President of the Trade Union Congress, Festus Osifo, along with other labor leaders. The meeting follows nationwide protests and strikes organized by the NLC and TUC to demand a new minimum wage. The labor unions have been advocating for a new living wage of 615,000 Naira, citing the insufficiency of the current minimum wage of 30,000 Naira in light of current economic realities and inflationary pressures.
The meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is seen as a significant development in the negotiations. The labor leaders have expressed optimism that the meetings with President Tinubu and the intervention by the National Assembly will lead to the resolution of their demands. The outcome of the meeting and the next steps in the negotiation process are yet to be determined.
