Miracle on Lagos Island: 10 Rescued Alive from Collapsed Building, No Fatalities Reported

Ten persons, including a 17-year-old girl, were rescued from the debris of a collapsed four-storey building on Lagos Island, Lagos State, yesterday. Thankfully, there were no fatalities in the incident. The collapse, which occurred near the Oba of Lagos, Rilwanu Akiolu's palace, at 15, Iga Idungaran Street, Lagos Island, at 11 a.m. yesterday, was attributed to ongoing renovation work on the residential building. The structure had previously been marked for evacuation by

the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) before its collapse.

Emergency responders, including personnel from the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA), Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and the Nigeria Police, swiftly arrived at the scene to rescue the trapped victims. The rescue efforts, carried out collaboratively, resulted in the successful extraction of all ten victims, comprising seven adult males and two females, from the rubble.

The prompt and coordinated response ensured that all rescued individuals received immediate pre-medical care from agency paramedics at the Iga Iduganran primary healthcare centre. By 3:30 p.m., all trapped victims had been safely rescued and transferred to the healthcare center for further treatment.

Dr. Femí Oke-Osanyitolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, confirmed that the rescued individuals, including the teenage girl, were receiving care at the healthcare center. He also stated that efforts were underway to level the remains of the collapsed building to ground zero and conduct integrity and material testing on adjacent structures.

The collapse of the four-storey building comes just days after a tragic incident in which a mosque collapsed in the Mushin area, resulting in the loss of three lives, including that of a 12-year-old boy. These incidents underscore the importance of stringent adherence to safety regulations and the need for regular maintenance and inspection of buildings to prevent such tragedies in the future.
