 President Bola Tinubu has pledged to improve living and working conditions for all working-age Nigerians, emphasizing the importance of fair wages and enhanced welfare for the nation's workforce. In his inaugural May Day message dedicated to workers nationwide, Tinubu's Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ajuri Ngelale, conveyed the President's commitment to enhancing the welfare of workers and providing them with the necessary tools for success. 

The President's assurance comes amid a cost of living crisis following economic reforms implemented by his administration. Tinubu initiated the discontinuance of subsidies on petrol upon assuming office, aiming to save government funds for infrastructure expansion. Additionally, he unified foreign exchange rates to curb currency arbitrage and other forex malpractices. However, these measures led to instability in the value of the Naira and increased hardship for Nigerians as food prices soared. 

Defending the removal of the petrol subsidy during a panel session at the World Economic Forum Special Meeting, Tinubu described it as necessary for the country's economic stability and growth. On May Day, Tinubu commended Nigerian workers for their dedication and contributions to the nation's progress. He praised workers across various sectors, including clerical officers, security personnel, teachers, doctors, and others, for their tireless efforts. 

May Day celebrations in Nigeria trace their roots back to the adoption of May 1 as a public holiday by the People's Redemption Party government in Kaduna and Kano in 1980. Subsequently, the Federal Government under Shehu Shagari declared May 1 a national holiday to commemorate International Workers' Day in 1981.
