Chaos: Police Fire on Protesting Women, Five Hospitalized in Delta State

In Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, a distressing incident unfolded as police from the Ughelli Area Command reportedly opened fire on protesting women from Oteri community. This led to five women being critically injured and hospitalized at the Central Hospital Ughelli.

The protest, characterized by women armed with leaves, was spurred by grievances against the police, accusing them of illegal arrests, molestation, and intimidation. Miss Valentine Adomi, a 24-year-old tailor, recounted her harrowing experience, stating that while on her way to the market, she encountered her family members in front of the police station. Upon hearing gunshots and tear gas, she attempted to flee but was struck in the leg, necessitating immediate medical attention.

Mrs. Vivian Aphiare highlighted the pervasive issue of multiple police roadblocks in their community, leading to transportation challenges and illegal arrests. She detailed the excessive bail demands ranging from N150,000 to N200,000 and the community's frustration with the police's actions.

Mama Harvest Ugbuwiako lamented the intrusion of the police into their lives, including the unauthorized search of their children's phones using a POS machine. She emphasized the absence of armed robbers or kidnappers in their community and criticized the police for exacerbating transportation costs and resorting to violence during protests.

President General of the Oteri-Ughelli community, Hon. Erakpofoke Peter, condemned the police's actions as inhumane and called for their withdrawal from the community. He described the protest as a peaceful expression of grievances against police misconduct and extortion.

The injured women, including Valentine Adomi, Edith Itive, Akaeze Joy, Loveth Brown-Tate, and Mrs. Lucky Philip, are currently receiving medical treatment. Despite attempts to reach Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, for comment, there has been no response.

The incident underscores the deep-seated tensions between the community and law enforcement, with residents demanding an end to police presence in their area due to alleged misconduct and extortion.

As of press time, the situation remains tense, highlighting the urgent need for dialogue and resolution between the community and law enforcement authorities.
