In a significant shift in policy, US President Joe Biden has authorized Ukraine to use weapons supplied by the United States to defend the Kharkiv region, which is currently under attack by Russian forces. This decision comes after increased pressure from Ukraine and other NATO allies to ease restrictions on the use of US-supplied weapons.
According to a US official, the president has directed his team to ensure that Ukraine can use US-supplied weapons for counter-fire purposes in the Kharkiv region. However, the official emphasized that the policy prohibiting the use of long-range missiles against targets inside Russia has not changed.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been urging the United States and other Western countries to
allow Ukraine to use longer-range weaponry to strike targets on Russian soil. Some countries, including Britain and the Netherlands, have already expressed support for Ukraine's right to defend itself against Russian aggression.
The decision comes ahead of a series of key meetings in Europe, including a NATO summit in Prague and the G7 summit in Italy, where Ukraine's plight is expected to be a major focus. President Biden will also meet with President Zelensky at ceremonies in France marking the World War II D-Day landings.
This development is a significant escalation in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, and it remains to be seen how Russia will respond to this new policy.
