Popular social media critic, Martins Vincent Otse, who is widely known by his online pseudonym VeryDarkMan, has been released from detention after spending a total of nine days in police custody. VeryDarkMan finally regained his freedom in the late hours of Sunday, marking the end of a period of uncertainty and concern among his followers and fellow activists.
His detention had sparked widespread outcry and raised questions about freedom of speech and online expression in Nigeria. While the specific details surrounding the allegations against VeryDarkMan remain undisclosed, it is known that he was arrested following multiple petitions against his online activities, which often involved criticism of various social and political issues.
Omoyele Sowore, the convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, confirmed VeryDarkMan’s release in a statement shared via social media on Sunday, welcoming the news with relief and expressing gratitude to all those who had campaigned for his freedom.
This recent detention is not the first time VeryDarkMan has found himself in police custody. In January of the same year, he was reportedly arrested following a petition by actress Tonto Dikeh, over comments made regarding the late Nigerian singer Mohbad's case.
