At least 19 individuals perished in a devastating auto accident that engulfed vehicles in flames on the Okene Bypass along the Okene-Lokoja Highway in Kogi state. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, has been confirmed by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
According to Assistant Corps Marshal Jonas Agwu, Public Education Officer of the FRSC, the collision involved a Dangote Cement truck and a Toyota Hiace bus. The harrowing rescue operation amidst the blazing wreckage consumed three hours, with FRSC operatives managing to extract only two survivors from the inferno.
Agwu elaborated that the Toyota bus, en route from Kano, was traveling along its designated lane when the Dangote truck, traveling from Port Harcourt, recklessly attempted to overtake another vehicle, resulting in a head-on collision.
"The impact of the collision resulted in an inferno that burnt the victims to death," Agwu stated, underscoring the severity of the crash. He further revealed that among the 22 individuals involved, all were male, with 19 tragically losing their lives and one sustaining injuries.
Remarkably, the two survivors owed their escape from harm to their compliance with traffic regulations mandating the use of seatbelts, Agwu emphasized.
In the aftermath, the deceased were transferred to the Okene General Hospital, where their remains were deposited.
Agwu reassured the public that the driver of the Dangote truck would face prosecution as per directives issued by the Corps Marshal, Alhaji Dauda Ali-Biu.
The devastating collision serves as a somber reminder of the importance of adhering to traffic regulations and exercising caution on the roads. As investigations continue and efforts to prevent such tragedies intensify, the nation mourns the loss of those who perished in this heart-wrenching accident.
