A massive fire outbreak ravaged several shops at Owode Market in Offa, Kwara State, during the early hours of Tuesday. The devastating incident left shop owners distraught as they watched their properties consumed by flames.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire likely originated from a cooking activity rather than an electrical fault. Despite efforts by bystanders to contain the blaze, it quickly spread, engulfing multiple shops in its path.
Fortunately, personnel from the Federal Fire Service and Kwara State Fire Service arrived promptly and managed to extinguish the fire before it caused further damage. However, the inferno still managed to affect at least five shops, resulting in significant losses for the affected traders.
Authorities are currently assessing the extent of the damage caused by the fire, but initial reports suggest that the value of goods and properties destroyed is substantial. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined, and investigations by the fire service are underway to ascertain the root cause of the incident.
This recent fire outbreak in Owode Market brings to mind previous incidents of similar nature in the region. Just eight months ago, a midnight fire razed a residential building in Offa, resulting in the destruction of property worth millions of naira. Additionally, reports from December highlighted two separate incidents in the Tanke area of Ilorin, where a total of 14 shops were consumed by fire.
The Kwara State Fire Service has been instrumental in mitigating the impact of these fire incidents, with their swift response helping to save numerous properties. Despite the challenges posed by such calamities, communities continue to rally together to support affected individuals and rebuild what has been lost.
As investigations into the cause of the Owode Market fire continue, authorities urge residents to exercise caution and adhere to fire safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
