"High-Stakes Showdown: Ex-CBN Chief Emefiele Remanded Over Alleged Corruption in $4.5bn Deal"

The Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja, on Monday, remanded the immediate-past Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, back to the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). This development came shortly after the anti-graft agency arraigned Emefiele on 23 counts bordering on abuse of office, accepting gratifications, corrupt demand, receiving property fraudulently obtained, and conferring corrupt advantage.

Justice Rahman Oshodi presided over the proceedings and made the remand order. The charges against Emefiele allege that he abused his office while serving as the CBN Governor, particularly through the allocation of $4.5 billion and N2.8 billion. Emefiele and another defendant, Henry Isioma-Omoile, were arraigned together, with both pleading not guilty to the charges.

During the arraignment, Justice Oshodi ordered that Emefiele should be remanded in EFCC custody, while Isioma-Omoile was to be remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre, where he was already being held. The judge also adjourned the case until Thursday, April 11, 2024, to hear their bail applications.

This recent development marks Emefiele's return to EFCC custody, approximately four and a half months after he left the custody of the anti-graft agency in November 2023. Emefiele's lawyer hinted at the possibility of a fresh arraignment between April 25 and 26, marking the fourth criminal case filed against him by the Federal Government.

The EFCC leveled various allegations against Emefiele, including abusing his authority by allocating foreign exchange without bids and corruptly accepting substantial sums of money through different channels. Emefiele's co-defendant, Isioma-Omoile, was accused of accepting gifts on Emefiele's behalf from agents.

Despite the serious charges, both defendants maintained their innocence and pleaded not guilty. Their bail applications were adjourned for ruling, with Emefiele's lawyer arguing for his client's release on self-recognizance or bail on liberal terms, emphasizing Emefiele's previous service to Nigeria as the former CBN governor. The prosecution did not oppose the bail applications but requested a closed session for certain witnesses who expressed concerns for their safety.

After considering the submissions from both sides, Justice Oshodi ordered Emefiele's remand in EFCC custody and Isioma-Omoile's return to the Ikoyi Correctional Centre. The case was adjourned until April 11, 2024, for the ruling on the bail applications and to commence trial.
