Gov. Aliyu Dethrones 15 Traditional Rulers in Sokoto State

In a significant development, Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has taken decisive action by dethroning 15 District Heads for various alleged infractions, including insubordination, involvement in land racketeering, aiding insecurity, and misappropriation of public properties. The announcement, made by the Governor's press secretary, Abubakar Bawa, underscores the government's commitment to upholding integrity and accountability in traditional leadership.

The statement released on Tuesday in Sokoto highlights the specific District Heads affected by the decision, including Unguwar Lalle, Yabo, Wamakko, Tulluwa, lllela, Dogon Daji, Kebbe, Alkammu, and Giyawa districts. Additionally, those appointed by the former Governor Aminu Tambuwal during the twilight of his administration have also been relieved of their positions. The reasons cited for their removal range from irregular appointment processes to rejection by their subjects, indicating a widespread discontentment with their leadership.

Further scrutiny has been directed towards the cases of District Heads in Isa, Kuchi, Kilgori, and Gagi, with investigations recommended for their alleged involvement in misconduct. Additionally, Sarkin Yakin Binji, a senior counselor in the Sultanate Council, has been transferred to Bunkari, while the District Head of Sabon Birni has been deployed to Gatawa.

While these measures demonstrate the government's resolve to address malfeasance within the traditional leadership structure, seven District Heads have been retained, reflecting their adherence to governance standards and positive engagement with their communities. Notable among those retained are Alhaji Aliyu Abubakar III Churoman Sokoto, Alhaji Ibrahim Dasuki Maccido Barayar Zaki, and Abubakar Salame Sarkin Arewan Salame, among others.

In a move aimed at ensuring fair and transparent governance, the government's decision is based on the recommendations of the Committee on the Review of Appointments of Traditional Rulers, Renaming of Tertiary Institutions, and the Dissolution of Governing Councils of State Parastatals. This systematic approach underscores the commitment to accountability and effective governance in Sokoto State.

Governor Aliyu's decisive action signals a new era of accountability and transparency in traditional leadership, reaffirming the government's dedication to promoting integrity and good governance across all sectors.
