EFCC Chairman Vows to Resign if Ex-Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello Escapes Prosecution

In a bold declaration, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has pledged to tender his resignation if embattled former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello evades prosecution. Speaking during an interactive session with selected editors at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja, Olukoyede asserted that all those implicated in obstructing Bello's arrest would face the full force of the law.

Bello, who was declared wanted by the EFCC on April 18 over alleged involvement in an N80 billion financial crime, has yet to appear in court for scheduled arraignments. Despite direct communication from the EFCC urging him to address the charges against him, Bello declined the invitation, denying that he was even invited and accusing the commission of spreading lies.

Expressing his determination to uphold the integrity of the EFCC's mandate, Olukoyede emphasized that he had personally overseen the prosecution of past governors, including Willie Obiano and Abdulfatah Ahmed. He underscored the urgency of pursuing justice in Bello's case, highlighting alleged financial misconduct, including the transfer of $720,000 from government funds to a bureau de change to prepay his child's school fees before leaving office.

Amidst legal proceedings initiated by Bello to vacate the arrest warrant issued against him, Olukoyede reiterated his commitment to ensuring accountability and transparency in governance. The court has scheduled a ruling on the application seeking to set aside the arrest warrant for May 10, with both parties presenting their arguments before Justice Emeka Nwite.

The unfolding saga surrounding Bello's legal battles underscores the EFCC's unwavering dedication to combating corruption and holding public officials accountable for their actions. Olukoyede's steadfast commitment to justice serves as a testament to the agency's resolve to uphold the rule of law and protect the interests of the Nigerian people.
