Tension and chaos engulfed the streets of Kaduna on Friday as law enforcement authorities clashed with members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), resulting in widespread pandemonium.
The turmoil unfolded as members of the IMN converged along the Katsina roundabout by Ahmadu Bello Way to embark on a procession, a gathering that raised concerns among authorities regarding potential threats to public safety and order.
Eyewitness accounts revealed that the presence of the IMN members instilled fear and panic among residents, particularly those whose businesses lined Ahmadu Bello Way. Fearing violence and disruption, many shop owners hastily closed their establishments to avoid being caught in the crossfire.
According to ASP Mansir Hassan, the spokesperson for the Kaduna State Police Command, the IMN's assembly was deemed unlawful under the proscription order issued by the Federal Government. He elaborated that the members, armed with dangerous weapons, posed a significant risk to public safety, prompting the police to intervene swiftly.
The situation quickly escalated as IMN members reportedly launched attacks on law enforcement officers attempting to disperse the crowd. In the ensuing confrontation, several policemen sustained injuries, underscoring the severity of the clash.
In response to the violence, the police swiftly moved to arrest numerous suspects found in possession of dangerous weapons. These individuals will be subject to legal proceedings once a comprehensive investigation has been conducted.
