The Enugu State Police Command executed a raid on the hideouts of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its Eastern Security Network (ESN) faction in the Akwuke area of Enugu metropolis. According to a statement by DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the raid occurred on Saturday at approximately 2:30 a.m.
During the operation, the police encountered resistance from the renegade group members, who initiated gunfire upon sighting the police. However, the law enforcement agents, armed with superior firepower, managed to overpower the assailants, leading to the death of two members of the group. The remaining members fled the scene, sustaining various gunshot wounds in the process.
Recovered from the hideout were significant weapons and ammunition, including one AK-47 rifle, one Sub-Machine Gun (SMG), and one stainless Pump-Action Gun (PAG). Additionally, 27 live rounds and 23 expended rounds of 7.62 mm caliber ammunition were seized. Furthermore, the police retrieved five live cartridges and a small blue-colored Gideon New Testament Bible, presumably used to conceal objects suspected to be charms.
DSP Daniel Ndukwe emphasized that the raid was part of proactive crime prevention strategies devised by the state's Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kanayo Uzuegbu. He noted that the recovered AK-47 rifle had its breech number wiped off, indicating possible tampering to conceal its origin.
The spokesperson also highlighted the involvement of the criminal elements in multiple attacks and the theft of police officers' rifles. He revealed that the recovered rifle's magazine bore the Nigeria Police Force color, further implicating the group in criminal activities.
The police assured the public that further discreet investigations were ongoing to unravel the full extent of the group's operations and networks.
The incident underscores ongoing efforts by security agencies to combat insurgency and maintain law and order in the region amidst escalating tensions and criminal activities perpetrated by separatist groups.
