Peter Obi has Broken Silence on LP Convention, Highlights Lack of Consultation by Leadership, Raises Concerns Over Financial Impropriety, and Advocates for Restructuring
In a recent development, Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State and the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, has finally addressed his absence from the National Convention of the party held in Nnewi, Anambra State. Speaking out on his verified X Space hosted by Parallel Facts, Obi expressed disappointment with the leadership's failure to consult key stakeholders ahead of the convention. He emphasized his passion for building a "new Nigeria" and stressed the importance of grassroots organization within the party.
Obi revealed that he advised the Comrade Julius Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC) to consult extensively with stakeholders, including Governor Alex Otti, Vice Presidential Candidate Yusuf Datti, Senators, House of Representatives members, gubernatorial candidates, and labor groups like the NLC and TUC, to ensure a well-organized convention. However, his advice was reportedly ignored, leading to his decision to abstain from the event.
Furthermore, Obi expressed concerns about financial impropriety within the party, particularly regarding allegations against Abure. He disclosed that an auditor had been appointed to investigate the accounts of the Labour Party and his campaign, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability.
Obi invoked divine consequences on individuals and groups who fail to provide an account of funds collected in his name and for his campaign, emphasizing the importance of integrity in political processes. Additionally, he voiced support for calls to restructure the 'OBIdient' movement, a bloc associated with his political aspirations.
The LP convention has been under scrutiny, with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) disowning it due to alleged breaches of electoral rules. Despite INEC's stance, LP's National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, defended the convention, asserting that due process was followed. The controversy surrounding the convention underscores the challenges facing the party and the need for transparency and inclusivity in political decision-making.
