"FAAN Shuts Down KFC Outlet at Lagos Airport Following Discrimination Complaints from Passenger with Disability"

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has taken decisive action by closing a branch of the popular fast-food chain, KFC, situated at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos State. This move comes in response to allegations of discriminatory treatment leveled against the outlet by a Passenger with Reduced Mobility (PRM), Debola Daniel.

According to a statement released by FAAN's Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, the intervention was prompted by a social media post made by Debola Daniel, who reported experiencing discrimination at the KFC outlet located within the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

In response, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, the MD/CE of FAAN, swiftly deployed a management team to investigate the matter. The team, comprising key personnel such as the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, the Regional Manager South West, the Acting General Manager Public Affairs, and the International Terminal Manager, conducted a thorough investigation into the allegations.

Based on the findings of the investigation, FAAN made the decision to shut down the KFC facility at the MMA, where the incident occurred. Furthermore, FAAN has instructed the management of KFC to issue a written apology to the affected PRM and to prominently display a policy statement of non-discrimination at the entrance of their facility at MMIA before resuming operations.

In light of these developments, FAAN expressed its sincere apologies to the affected Passenger with Reduced Mobility and assured all airport users that it remains committed to upholding the rights of every passenger and preventing any form of discrimination within airport premises.

Debola Daniel, the individual who brought attention to the incident, shared his account of the experience on social media. He recounted being denied entry into the KFC outlet due to his use of a wheelchair, highlighting the broader challenges faced by individuals with disabilities in Nigeria. Despite being recognized by the security staff and accompanied by family members, Debola was informed by the restaurant's manager that wheelchairs were not permitted inside the establishment.

The incident sparked a confrontation between Debola's family members and the staff, eventually leading to the decision to leave the premises. However, the situation was documented through videos and photographs, drawing attention to the discriminatory policy enforced by the KFC outlet.

Debola expressed his dismay at the treatment he received, emphasizing the need for greater inclusivity and respect for individuals with disabilities in Nigerian society. He vowed to escalate the matter until a satisfactory resolution is reached, urging KFC Nigeria to reconsider its approach to serving disabled customers.

This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by individuals with disabilities in accessing public spaces and the importance of addressing discriminatory practices to foster a more inclusive society.
