The Department of State Services (DSS) has granted permission for the personal doctor of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to visit and conduct a medical examination on him. This development was disclosed by Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu's Special Counsel, via a social media post on Thursday. Ejimakor highlighted that the process of securing this visit had been ongoing since the previous year, indicating the persistent efforts made by Kanu's legal team to facilitate it.
In his statement, Ejimakor expressed relief at the breakthrough, stating that a competent doctor, chosen by Kanu himself, had successfully examined him. He acknowledged the challenges faced in achieving this visitation, particularly considering the significant delay since it was initially sought. Additionally, Ejimakor mentioned that members of the legal team had also met with Kanu, conveying a message of solidarity and determination to continue advocating for his rights and fair treatment.
This development comes after Kanu had previously raised concerns about his health during court proceedings, alleging that the DSS had not adequately addressed his medical needs. By allowing Kanu's personal doctor to visit and assess his condition, the DSS has taken a step towards addressing these concerns and ensuring that Kanu receives appropriate medical attention while in custody.
Meanwhile, Ejimakor also criticized the Nigerian army for releasing over 300 Boko Haram suspects, contrasting this action with Kanu's continued detention. He highlighted the perceived injustice in detaining Kanu, who is advocating for self-determination, while releasing individuals suspected of involvement in terrorist activities. Ejimakor's remarks underscored the ongoing debate surrounding Kanu's detention and the broader issues of justice and security in Nigeria.
