In a highly anticipated and contentious national convention held in Nnewi, Anambra State, the Labour Party (LP) witnessed the re-election of Mr. Julius Abure as its national chairman for a second term. The atmosphere was charged with tension as delegates convened amidst protests from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), demanding Abure's resignation and the establishment of a caretaker transition committee to oversee a new convention.

Despite the calls for change, Abure emerged victorious, with delegates unanimously affirming his candidacy. The declaration was made by Mr. Ikechukwu Emetu, Deputy Governor of Abia State and Chairman of the National Convention. Alongside Abure, other incumbent party officers were reinstated to their respective positions, marking a significant moment in the LP's leadership landscape.

Mr. Peter Okoye, a factional chairman of the Labour Party in Anambra State, vehemently contested the legitimacy of the convention. Central to Okoye's grievances were the absence of essential congresses at the ward, local government, and state levels, as well as the exclusion of key stakeholders such as the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC). Okoye's critique underscored the internal divisions plaguing the Labour Party, as factions within the party vied for control and legitimacy. The dispute threatened to overshadow Abure's re-election, casting a shadow of uncertainty over the LP's future trajectory.
