EFCC, NFIU Join Probe Into Alleged Coup Plotters as Investigation Deepens

The ongoing investigation into the alleged masterminds of the recent attempted coup in Nigeria has taken a new turn as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) have formally joined the probe.

According to security sources, the two financial intelligence agencies were invited to assist in tracking suspicious financial transactions and funding networks that may have supported the alleged coup plot.

The move, insiders said, aims to uncover possible links between the suspects and external financiers, as investigators intensify efforts to unravel the broader network behind the foiled attempt.

While details of the investigation remain closely guarded, sources within the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) confirmed that collaboration with the EFCC and NFIU became necessary after preliminary findings indicated irregular financial flows connected to certain individuals under scrutiny.

“This phase of the investigation will focus on financial trails, possible money laundering, and foreign connections that could have facilitated the plot,” one source disclosed.

The EFCC and NFIU are expected to provide technical support and intelligence-sharing mechanisms to help establish the financial dimensions of the alleged plot.

Authorities have maintained that all suspects will be afforded due process, stressing that national security remains the top priority.
