A security stakeholders’ meeting convened in Katsina to address the state’s worsening banditry crisis was violently disrupted on Tuesday after hoodlums stormed the venue, attacking participants and journalists.
The meeting, organised by the Katsina Security Community Initiative, was aimed at finding community-driven solutions to the incessant killings and attacks plaguing the state.
Trouble began when Bashir Kurfi, the convener, started his presentation on how several local government areas had been effectively shut down by bandit activities. According to witnesses, a man interrupted Kurfi, accusing him of making “anti-government” remarks.
The interruption quickly escalated into chaos as others joined in, hurling chairs at participants. Eyewitnesses said the attackers, some armed with knives, threatened to harm anyone they perceived as being critical of government.
In his reaction, Kurfi alleged that the thugs were sponsored.
The violence forced participants and key stakeholders to disperse abruptly, cutting short discussions on how to tackle insecurity in Katsina, one of the states worst-hit by banditry in northern Nigeria.
