At least 28 people have been infected in Adamawa State following the outbreak of an unidentified rare disease, health authorities confirmed on Saturday.
Dr. Suleiman Bashir, Chairman of the Adamawa State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, told reporters in Yola that some of the affected patients were receiving treatment at the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital (MAUTH).
“We are investigating the situation to determine the exact nature of the disease,” Dr. Bashir said. “Samples have been sent for laboratory analysis, and we are working closely with federal health authorities to establish a diagnosis.”
He disclosed that health teams had been deployed to affected communities to trace contacts and provide emergency response. While the symptoms of the illness have not been publicly disclosed, officials said precautionary measures were being taken to prevent further spread.
Authorities are also engaging in public health awareness campaigns, urging residents to report unusual symptoms promptly and to adhere to hygiene protocols.
The Adamawa outbreak adds to growing public concern over Nigeria’s ability to contain sudden health emergencies, especially in underserved regions with limited medical infrastructure.
Dr. Bashir assured residents that both state and federal governments were monitoring the situation closely. “We appeal for calm,” he said. “Everything possible is being done to manage the outbreak and protect public health.”
Further details, including the source and nature of the disease, are expected once laboratory test results are released.
