Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reacted to the unsealing of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s office at the National Assembly, describing the development as a “victory of reason” but warning that the time lost by her constituents can never be recovered.
The Senate had earlier suspended Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, for six months. On Tuesday, however, the Sergeant-at-Arms of the National Assembly reopened her office, effectively ending the restriction on her legislative duties.
In a statement shared via his official X handle, Atiku expressed solidarity with the Kogi lawmaker, noting that her perseverance symbolises resilience against political intimidation.
Atiku also broadened his criticism to include what he described as a pattern of democratic subversion under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. He cited the suspension of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and lawmakers in the state assembly, alongside the treatment of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, as deliberate attempts to silence opposition voices.
“The suspension of Governor Sim Fubara and lawmakers of the Rivers State House of Assembly, the unlawful suspension of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, and the weaponisation of state institutions to harass and intimidate opposition voices are not isolated acts. They are deliberate markers of the Tinubu administration’s strategy as 2027 approaches: to subvert our hard-earned democracy and compromise the will of the people at any cost,” Atiku alleged.
Meanwhile, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has continued to raise concerns about threats to her life and what she describes as selective enforcement of justice within the Senate. She previously accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of ignoring petitions regarding her safety while pursuing politically motivated actions against her.
The unsealing of her office has drawn mixed reactions from Nigerians on social media, with some insisting that the development was simply the expiration of her six-month suspension rather than an act of justice.
