A rally in support of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, was briefly disrupted by suspected political thugs in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. The incident occurred on April 26 at the Church of God Mission Camp, where the New Associates group was being inaugurated.
As the ceremony began, gunmen emerged from nearby creeks and bushes, firing sporadically into the crowd. Supporters of Wike, however, stood firm despite the attack. Security operatives from the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and DSS engaged the hoodlums, allowing the rally to eventually proceed.
After the incident, Comrade Ebilade Ekerefe, Secretary of NEW Associates, accused the state government of attempting to disrupt their peaceful rally. Dr. Pabara Igwele, former Commissioner of Health in Bayelsa State, echoed this sentiment, stating that anyone trying to cause panic was motivated by politics.
Despite the interruption, the ceremony continued, and the New Associates group was inaugurated. The convener, Barr. George Turnah, MON, praised President Bola Tinubu's appointments of notable Niger Delta sons and daughters to positions of trust, including Wike and others.
The rally showcased support for Wike and appreciation for President Tinubu's administration.
