Retd. Army General Murdered in Abuja, 4 Suspects Arrested

The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has arrested four suspects in connection with the murder of a retired Brigadier General, Uwem Udokwere, in his Abuja residence.

According to the Commissioner of Police in charge of FCT, Benneth Igweh, the suspects were apprehended by police operatives from Utako Division on Sunday following credible intelligence.

Igweh disclosed that the suspects were responsible for the attack, robbery, and killing of the retired officer on June 22 at his residence in Sunshine Estate, Kabusa area of Abuja.

The commissioner stated that the suspects confessed to the crime, revealing that they stabbed the general when he attempted to resist them with his pistols.

The police recovered the knife used in the crime and the deceased's stolen phone from the suspects.

Igweh noted that efforts are being intensified to arrest other fleeing members of the gang and recover the pistols taken from the deceased.

In a related development, operatives from the command's anti-kidnapping unit arrested two wanted and notorious kidnap suspects in Dei-Dei Area of Abuja on May 26.

The suspects, who escaped from Kuje Prison in 2022, were members of a kidnap syndicate that abducted 17 victims from a livestock estate in Dei-Dei in December 2023 and collected a substantial ransom before releasing them.

The suspects confessed to the crime and revealed that their syndicate was one of four kidnapping groups terrorizing FCT and its environs.

The police recovered 91 rustled cattle, four sheep, and an AK-47 rifle from the suspects.

In another coordinated clearance operation, the anti-kidnapping unit arrested an informant, logistics supplier, and POS operator to kidnappers.

The suspect, who was the chief informant and logistics supplier to the kidnapping groups, confessed to facilitating the movement of nurses, hard drugs, and sex workers to the kidnappers.

He also admitted to distributing about N20 million on behalf of the kidnappers and revealed that the group had over 15 members, all with AK-47 rifles.

The commissioner stated that the suspects would be charged to court upon completion of investigations.

This incident highlights the escalating insecurity in Abuja and the need for increased security measures to protect lives and property. The police are working tirelessly to combat crime and ensure the safety of residents in the FCT.
