Private School Proprietors Shun Labour Strike

The National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), Lagos State Chapter, has refused to join the ongoing labour strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC). According to the President of NAPPS, Lagos Chapter, Alaka Yusuf, the association opted out of the strike because it believes that strike action is not the best way to resolve issues.

Yusuf explained that private schools operate on a planned academic calendar and cannot afford to lose any day. He emphasized that NAPPS is committed to ensuring that students learn adequately and do not lose any ground in their academic pursuits.

The NLC and TUC had called for a nationwide strike to protest the Federal Government's handling of negotiations on a new minimum wage. However, the strike has been suspended for a week to allow for continued negotiations between the labour unions and the government.

While public primary and secondary schools were closed on Monday and Tuesday due to the strike, private schools remained open for operations. Adebola Olubodun, Principal of Grimes International College, a private school in Lagos, confirmed that the school did not participate in the strike. "We are in school, teaching and learning are ongoing, and students will be having their tests this week. For us, there is no strike," she said.

NAPPS has advised its members to be watchful during the strike and ensure that students continue to receive quality education. The association has also urged the labour unions and the government to continue negotiating and find a resolution to the dispute.
