Nigeria's Flamingos Secure Dominant Victory in World Cup Qualifiers

Nigeria's U17 women's national team, the Flamingos, took a significant step towards qualifying for the 2024 FIFA U17 Women's World Cup with a commanding 4-1 victory over Liberia in the first leg of the final round of qualifiers. The Flamingos, who have participated in all but one of the previous seven editions of the World Cup, showcased their dominance at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium in Monrovia.

The match saw Abidemi Moshood open the scoring for Nigeria in the 19th minute, followed by a goal from Peace Effiong just ten minutes later. Harmony Chidi, who had previously scored a hat-trick in the 6-0 victory over Burkina Faso, continued her impressive form by adding Nigeria's third goal in the 36th minute. Blessing Ifitezue, a substitute, sealed the victory for the Flamingos with a goal in the second half.

Although Liberia managed to pull one goal back through Yassah Gwaikolo from the penalty spot in the closing minutes, Nigeria still holds a healthy advantage heading into the return fixture on June 14. The second leg will take place at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, with the aggregate winner securing a spot in the World Cup.

The Flamingos, who won Nigeria's first World Cup medal in the U17 category in 2022, are determined to make their mark in the Dominican Republic in 2024. Coach Bankole Olowookere and his team are focused on becoming the first African U17 team to reach the World Cup final, and their dominant performance against Liberia has put them in a favorable position to achieve that goal.
