A devastating gun battle erupted in Nnewi and Nnobi communities of Anambra State on June 17, 2024, leaving a vigilante commander and five other persons dead. The incident has sparked widespread concern about the security situation in the state.
According to sources, the hoodlums initially attacked Nnewi, engaging security operatives in a fierce shootout. The operatives pursued the hoodlums, who fled to Nnobi, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. During the chaos, the hoodlums killed a security operative and an unidentified person.
The hoodlums then fled to Onyibo Junction in Nnobi, where they encountered another group of security operatives. In the ensuing shootout, stray bullets struck a nine-year-old child, two women, and others. The hoodlums also abducted a man traveling in a jeep and pushed his wife down, fleeing with the vehicle.
The vigilante commander, Eloka Onyejekwe, was among those killed in the shootout. The driver of the vigilante vehicle was shot in the leg, and several others were wounded.
The Anambra State police command confirmed the incident, promising to release more information once available. "I have been made aware of the incident. The information is still sketchy. As soon as I get the whole information, I will go to air," said Ikenga Tochukwu, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO).
The incident has raised questions about the effectiveness of security measures in the state. The government has promised to review security arrangements and ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future.
