In a harrowing episode on Monday night, armed bandits orchestrated a brazen assault along the Funtua-Gusau Road in Katsina State, Nigeria, setting up a blockade near Ungwar Boka Mine. Their target: two unsuspecting vehicles traversing the highway—a luxury bus en route from Sokoto to Onitsha and a Volkswagen Golf heading from Gusau to Zaria.
As the assailants unleashed a hail of gunfire, both vehicles were forced off the road, their passengers trapped in a perilous predicament. However, in a stroke of fortune amidst the chaos, a distress call reached the ears of a vigilant police patrol team known as Operation EYE.
Responding with commendable swiftness, the officers swiftly deployed an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) to the scene of the ambush. Arriving just in the nick of time, they confronted the bandits, disrupting their nefarious scheme to abduct the stranded passengers. Faced with the formidable presence of law enforcement, the assailants beat a hasty retreat into the nearby undergrowth, evading capture.
The police, undeterred by the bandits' escape, focused their efforts on rescuing the imperiled travelers. With meticulous precision, they succeeded in extricating 45 passengers from the luxury bus, predominantly comprising individuals of Igbo descent, along with an additional five individuals from the besieged Volkswagen Golf bearing the registration number DKA-12YF. Despite the majority of passengers being safely accounted for, the whereabouts of five individuals remained a haunting mystery, casting a pall of uncertainty over the otherwise triumphant operation. In response to this distressing development, the authorities swiftly mobilized additional resources, intensifying search operations to locate the missing individuals and bring closure to their anxious families.
