Nigerian Army Launches Probe After Soldiers Break Out of Guard Room

In a surprising turn of events, the Nigerian Army is under fire as authorities launch a probe into how soldiers detained in guard rooms for various offenses managed to break out of the facility situated at the 8 Division Garrison in Sokoto.

Following a directive from the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, the army has committed to examining the condition of all detention facilities, emphasizing that the lives of detainees are of utmost importance.

Daily Trust reported an incident where Lance Corporal Charles Ekefure (17NA/76/1660) was reportedly shot after some detained soldiers broke out of their cells in Sokoto State, sparking a series of events leading to the detention of approximately 100 soldiers, with 10 held in each cell. Their demand for improved living conditions and better food ignited the controversy.

Reacting to the situation, Nigerian Army spokesman Onyema Nwachukwu stated that the service would not hesitate to take appropriate action against the soldiers involved in what he described as "unruly behavior" at the Sokoto detention facility.

Nwachukwu emphasized that while the Army regrets the incident, it cannot condone the manner in which the inmates expressed their grievances. Mutiny and conduct prejudicial to service order are considered grave offenses, and this incident is a clear example of such misconduct.

The soldiers involved will face sanctions for failing to properly channel their complaints to the authorities. If it is found that they did follow the proper procedures and no action was taken, administrative measures will be taken against those who failed to fulfill their duties effectively.

As the Army proceeds with the COAS directive to assess all detention facilities, it remains committed to ensuring that detainees, even those awaiting confirmation of sentencing, are treated with dignity until their fate is determined. This commitment underscores the Army's dedication to maintaining professional standards and a fair justice system.

The Nigerian Army appreciates the concern and support of all Nigerians and pledges to remain focused on its mission to combat security challenges facing the nation, working closely with sister services and other security agencies. #NigerianArmy #GuardRoomBreakout #ProbeInitiated #DetaineesLivesMatter
