Ward attendants at the Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja, located in Kogi State, took to the streets in a peaceful protest on Tuesday following the tragic demise of one of their own, the late Salamatu Aliu, who served in the Post Natal Ward.
According to sources familiar with the incident, the deceased was brought to the hospital for urgent medical attention on Sunday evening. However, due to a power outage that rendered the hospital without electricity, doctors and nurses on duty were unable to attend to her promptly. Consequently, Salamatu Aliu was referred to the Kogi State Specialist Hospital, where she tragically passed away shortly after arrival.
Expressing their frustration and grief, one of the protesters, who preferred to remain anonymous, condemned the alleged negligence of the medical staff in the Accident and Emergency Ward. They highlighted the need for immediate action from the hospital management to prevent similar occurrences in the future, emphasizing the equal value of all lives and urging an end to unfair treatment.
Despite the emotional turmoil, the protesters were eventually persuaded to return to work after receiving assurances from hospital authorities that the matter would be thoroughly investigated and addressed.
Efforts to obtain a response from the hospital management were unsuccessful at the time of reporting. However, the hospital's legal adviser, Enny O. Esq., acknowledged that the incident had come to their attention and was being investigated to ascertain the facts.
This incident serves as a grim reminder of a similar occurrence in the Accident and Emergency Ward of the hospital a few months earlier, where relatives of a deceased patient allegedly assaulted medical personnel over perceived negligence. The ensuing unrest led to a temporary halt in hospital services as medical staff protested against unsafe working conditions and demanded better treatment from management.
