"Nigerian Police Arrest Security Guard for Fatal Assault, Issue Strong Warning Against Jungle Justice"

The Nigeria Police Force has issued a stern caution against the prevalent practice of jungle justice in the country, emphasizing its adverse effects on the proper dispensation of justice. The Force, through its Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, underscored the global condemnation of vigilantism and the need to uphold the rule of law.

In a recent incident reported on March 25, 2024, the Itire Divisional Police Headquarters in Lagos received a distress call regarding the vandalism of a vehicle on Shonde Street, Itire. Following the arrest of one of the vandals by concerned citizens, the suspect was handed over to Agunbiade Adekunle, the security guard of the street.

Shocked by the vandalism, Adekunle, in a moment of misguided justice, resorted to extreme measures to punish the suspect. Tragically, his actions resulted in the fatal assault and subsequent burning of the vandal. The gravity of the situation was not lost on the authorities, prompting the immediate arrest of Adekunle.

Adekunle's arrest serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of taking the law into one's own hands. His actions not only cost a life but also undermined the very fabric of justice that the police force seeks to uphold.

However, this incident is not an isolated one. Similar cases of jungle justice have been recorded across the nation, hindering the proper investigation and prosecution of criminal cases. The Nigeria Police Force strongly condemns such acts and urges the public to refrain from resorting to vigilantism.

ACP Adejobi emphasized that jungle justice is a criminal offense and a grave violation of human rights, posing a significant threat to the societal fabric. It perpetuates violence, fear, and lawlessness, undermining the authority of legitimate institutions and weakening the rule of law.

The Force reiterated its commitment to upholding the rights of all citizens and urged communities to reject vigilantism and uphold the rule of law. Only through fair and transparent legal processes can justice be served, ensuring the principles of democracy, human rights, and equality for all.

In light of this incident, the Nigeria Police Force called on the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and report incidents of criminality for appropriate action. It reinforced the importance of adherence to the rule of law in the society, highlighting the need for collective efforts to combat crime and ensure justice for all.
