"Police Service Commission Calls for Action: Urges Sanctions Against Imo and Delta CPs Over Recent Police Killings

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has taken a decisive stance in response to the tragic killings of police officers in Imo and Delta States, demanding sanctions against the respective Commissioners of Police in those regions. The commission's firm position comes in the wake of escalating violence that has claimed the lives of law enforcement personnel, prompting urgent calls for accountability and reform within the police hierarchy.

Specifically addressing the alarming surge in attacks targeting police officers across various states, the PSC has called upon the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to reassess the competency and effectiveness of the Commissioners of Police overseeing state commands. The demand for sanctions follows the recent loss of lives in Ohoro Forest, Ughelli North Local Government Area (LGA) of Delta, where six officers of the Nigeria Police Force fell victim to a deadly ambush. Additionally, six other officers are reported missing in action, highlighting the gravity of the security challenges faced by law enforcement agencies.

In a parallel incident underscoring the precarious nature of policing duties, two policemen attached to MOPOL 18, Owerri, Imo State, were ruthlessly gunned down by assailants believed to be affiliated with the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its affiliate, the Eastern Security Network. The attack, which occurred in the Okigwe area of the state, involved the use of explosives targeting a police patrol van, resulting in tragic loss of life and further exacerbating tensions in the region.

Solomon Arase, chairman of the PSC and a retired Inspector-General of Police, issued a stern condemnation of the escalating violence against law enforcement personnel. In a statement relayed by the commission's spokesperson, Ikechukwu Ani, Arase emphasized the imperative of holding accountable those entrusted with ensuring public safety. He asserted that imposing sanctions on incompetent or negligent State Commissioners of Police is essential to averting future tragedies and preserving the integrity of the police force.

Expressing heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen officers, Arase urged for a collective effort to confront the scourge of militancy and banditry plaguing the nation. He stressed the need for integrated intelligence policing strategies to effectively combat emerging threats and safeguard the lives of police officers tasked with upholding law and order.

Amidst the somber aftermath of these tragic incidents, Arase rallied serving officers to maintain resilience and fortitude in the face of adversity. Encouraging them to draw upon their unwavering commitment to duty, he underscored the importance of solidarity and vigilance in confronting the challenges posed by criminal elements. As the nation mourns the loss of its brave officers, the PSC's call for accountability serves as a clarion call for reform and renewed determination in the ongoing battle against insecurity."
