"Anxiety and Delay: Parents Await Reunion with Rescued Children from Kuriga School Abduction"

"Parents of children abducted from Kuriga Primary and Junior Secondary School in Kaduna State are anxiously waiting to reunite with their children, sixty hours after their rescue. The abduction, which occurred on March 7, 2024, lasted for 16 days before the children were rescued on March 24.

Although the military handed over the 131 rescued children to Kaduna State governor, Senator Uba Sani, on Monday, parents have yet to be reunited with them due to delays in the release process. This delay has sparked concern among stakeholders.

Adamu Abdulrauf Kuriga, one of the parents, expressed his eagerness to see his daughter, Hadiza, back home, saying, "This is the joy of every parent to see his child."

Similarly, Khadiza, another parent, shared her anticipation, stating, "We are happy the children were rescued and are with the government. But as a mother, I want to see my daughter because we can’t wait to see the children back home with us."

Community leader Jibril Gwadabe Kuriga also voiced his impatience, mentioning, "We hope to see them because that was why I was at the Government House on Sunday to see the children but unfortunately, they were not brought there at the time. But we are still waiting to receive them."

The rescued children are currently under the care of the Kaduna State Ministry of Human and Social Services, housed in a facility manned by security agencies. Aminu Kuriga, a resident, noted that the community is now calm knowing that the children are safe with the state government.

Regarding conflicting figures on the number of kidnapped students, Aminu clarified, "We later went back and issued another form to parents and we got the exact number 137 of the children abducted."

Mohammad Lawal Shehu, Chief Press Secretary to the state governor, assured that the rescued children would be reunited with their families soon after undergoing psychotherapy.

Sources confirmed that a bandit kingpin known as Yellow Janbros was behind the abduction, aiming to embarrass the government. Despite efforts by the military, Janbros managed to evade arrest and shepherd the children through the bushes for days before releasing them in Zamfara State.

The community remains hopeful for the safe return of the children and appreciates the efforts of security agencies and the state government in rescuing them."
